Thrilling debate on “Is COVID-19 Spiritual Blackmail”?
Spiritual blackmail?Interesting, huh? More often than not, many believers ask subtly, whether God allows negative circumstances like diseases, betrayals and murder, just to get us to run back to Him? I mean, like a predator, does He set a trap waiting for his prey to be caught? Many times, I hear folks ask, “If God is real if He is indeed alive, why this? Why that? Is He is not all-loving? Did humans not write the Bible? How certain can we be of their judgment? Is this a sign of spiritual blackmail?
Check out this scenario
One time, I overheard a group of believers chatting and this was the focus of their conversation. In the end, they seemed to have agreed that asking certain questions like these is not encouraged in the faith but rather perceived to be “questioning” the sovereignty or power of God.
Mark 3:35 says;
“A house divided against itself, that house cannot stand”.
The devil became the ruler of the world when Adam sold his authority given to him by God through his disobedience in the Garden of Eden. Evidently, he is the orchestrator of all the evil in this world because God is light and no darkness can abide in Him. This is why He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to reconcile us back to Himself (God) by paying the price for our sins on Calvary.
God, being faithful still works things out for our good. Well, we’re usually blinded by the hardship so we don’t recognize it. As for the questions we may have, why not get the responses from Him instead. God yearns for a relationship with us. He primarily speaks to us through His Word and the Holy Spirit helps us understand Him better.
Nonetheless, God respects our choices. We have the choice to either choose Adam’s way or that of Jesus. What more freedom do we want? Evidently, we need Him more than He needs us! We were not created to be puppets. One may ask, why can’t God defeat the devil once and for all? He can and he already did, a long time ago. This, He did for our sake, to give us back that authority Adam sold out to the enemy. We must use our authority as believers. All we have to do is to appropriate it in our lives.
Let’s face the truth about this so-called “spiritual blackmail”
The sacrifice part is what we don’t want to hear, right? Yes, pursuing God will deny us of enjoying some pleasures (though they may not be evil in themselves) but moving in the opposite direction will cost you eternally! As the saying goes, “You can’t eat your cake and have it”.

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly”.
Intimacy is the goal, not “spiritual blackmail”.
